Goetz looks for an early opportunity in his semifinal vs Goodwin

The 2023 KCCC Club Singles Championship (CSC) saw a tough semifinal battle play out last Saturday at the Willow Creek court in Kansas City, Missouri. Dylan Goodwin (4) and Jonathan Goetz (12) squared off in a rematch of the 2022 CSC final.

With eight bisques in hand for Goetz, the match was full of intrigue as Goodwin really couldn’t set three-ball breaks and had to opt for more of a grind-it-out approach, piecing together two-ball opportunities. The first game was nip and tuck, but Goodwin secured a 16-12 win. In game two, Goodwin was able to pick up a mid-court break that he ran out through H14 (penult), but sailed out of bounds on the hoop score to botch the leave and keep the game open. Goetz eventually clawed back, but came up short was Goodwin claimed a 17-14 win for a 2-0 match win.

That sets up this Saturday’s 8:30 a.m. final between Goodwin and John Rensenhouse, with Rensenhouse holding 10 bisques for each game of the best-of-two match. The Bronze Medal, third place game, will feature Goetz (12) against Jim Ratzlaff (10). That game is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, October 21.

CLUB NOTES

  • OPEN PLAY THIS WEEK: With just the championship final on tap this Saturday, the club will also have double-banked open play available during the championship (with the championship game taking precedent for interference).
  • GAME MANAGEMENT VOLUNTEERS: Besides open play this Saturday, the KCCC will be accepting volunteers for officiating, board keeping and clock management for the championship match.
  • GRAND PRIX GAP OPENS UP: Last weekend’s action saw Goodwin establish big lead in the new Club Grand Prix race. With 66 points, Goodwin is in first with John Rensenhouse (44) and Jonathan Goetz (43) locked in a battle for second place. With the Bronze Medal game set for October 21, the GP will stay open three more weeks minimum so that means points are still available in both the CSC and in ZED games.
  • ZED ACTION: Last Saturday also saw some ZED games with Justin Marciniak (7) and Valerie Andruss (14) winning a 2v1 game against John Rensenhouse (14) by a 12-11 tally. Rensenhouse worked with three bisques to his advantage in the game. Following that Rensenhouse claimed a 21-10 win over Andruss in an even game.
  • BISQUE COUNTER: The club introduced a new innovation this week, utilizing a traditional courtside scoreboard as a bisque counter (see photo).
